Hallgrimskirkja Interior, Iceland, 2025

I had known before my trip to Iceland that the church in Reykjavik was a monument of the city as well as an architectural wonder. It was my last day in Iceland when I decided I would visit Hallgrimskirkja. As someone who appreciates Gothic church architecture, Hallgrimskirkja set itself apart from other churches I have visited due to its clear inspiration of Iceland’s landscape— particularly the basalt columns then lend their form here. The interior of the church was minimally adorned and, as a result, my eyes were drawn to the striking symmetry of the central nave. This image captures the brightness and simplistic form of the church’s vaulting. I wish I had more time on my trip to be able to sit and allow my eyes to trace the forms in quiet contemplation.
