Dyrholaey, Iceland is a majestic cliffside where you can truly feel the strength of nature. The strong winds and darkened skies send a dominating calm that rips through your body. This was my favourite stop on my trip as one of the most breathtaking scenes in Iceland. It’s a surreal experience to be up so high above black sand beaches taking in the puffin colonies in their daily lives.
I arrived here late in the evening, but since it was the height of summer the sun never really set. Another incredible phenomenon of nature that allowed for endless exploring. The drive up to the cliffs was winding and steep. While it was obvious this was a popular tourist stop and many people had driven up the same road, the lack of guard rails was slightly distressing.
At the top of the cliffs the wind was strong, but it felt nominal as I took in the sheer awe of the landscape. Parts of the cliffs that I dared to venture to had no railing, but the wind itself was a foreboding warning to not approach too closely. I spent hours here watching puffins hurry about their business: preening, fishing, and taking flight.
The stand alone rock in this image perfectly embodies the spirit of the cliffs as a powerful immovable monument to nature.
